Heading out on the health highway is one of the most important journeys for one to start on. It often starts with a single choice like I am going to exercise, or lose a few pounds, or go to the chiropractor. Sometimes taking this road is moving away from what we have seen in our own family. An uncle who has diabetes, or a parent with Alzheimer’s. We decide that we don’t want to end our journey where they are and we choose a different road. Often this journey begins to move toward a state like fitness, happiness, or fitting into our skinny jeans. Regardless of the motivation the journey begins with one step that turns into more steps as we are successful. We build on our success of starting with eating healthy to adding exercise then cleaning up our diet more, avoiding sugar or dairy, moving from jogging to running a 5k to doing a half marathon. 

These kinds of steps and so many more, are steps of growth along the health highway that mark our growth and increasing our wellbeing and quality of life.   The health highway leads to us getting better with age instead of worse. 

 There is an important landmark on the health journey that I want you to pay attention for. It is the point where you realize that you can’t do, eat or behave the way you used to.   When you notice that if you eat 1 scoop of ice cream which you once ate a bowl of nightly you get sick or don’t feel like yourself.

 This point of the journey is what I call the health tightrope.    Different than one getting sicker on their life’s journey, when one gets healthier the road narrows. As one’s health increases it takes less to detour from the highway. The balancing act of maximizing your wellbeing becomes more demanding as you are more fine tuned. This is a point to celebrate rather than to see as a setback or frustration. 

 You see when you are unhealthy you can eat all the pizza, ice cream and soda you want and not necessarily notice it, for now. You will pay for it later in the form of heart disease, diabetes or cancer. Or lost vitality with your grand kids, or years of life lost. This inability to perceive the damage being done by a mismanaged lifestyle is a destructive survival value.

The person who is healthy and well connected to their body will have the constructive survival value of feeling bad (or getting ill) when they do things that aren’t good for them. Someone who is unhealthy might say they have a stronger constitution while really the one who is sicker. Someone who exercises regularly and then misses a week may feel awful.   The same goes for chiropractic care and your spine. When your nerve system if more fine tuned you only have to be slightly off to really notice it.   Often practice members may come in thinking they are really off or have backslid when they aren’t. They are just healthier; more fine tuned and have greater awareness of their body.

This holds true for every area of your quality of life. … Your relationships, your spiritual health your finances and paying attention to your life choices.

Ignorance may be bliss however it is not a path to excellence. When your health is concerned lack of body awareness and perception is a path to poor choices. Health people make healthy choices. You can drive a beat up old ford on the health highway with bald tires, cracks in the seats and windows and rust on the body. And you may be perfectly blissful and content. However if you were driving a fine tuned Porsche and you noticed the wheels wobble at 70 mph you may be very irritated. Maybe more so than when you drove the old ford with all its problems. I would rather drive the Porsche and keep it in top shape.

As your health highway turns into a health tightrope embrace and celebrate your success.   The dividends it will pay you in terms of quality of life and longevity are large.

Sleep your way to health

According to a study published in the August 1, 2010 edition of the scientific journal , SLEEP, getting seven hours of sleep is optimal for maintaining heart health. Getting too much, or too little, sleep can increase a person’s chances of developing cardiovascular disease, according to the research. What the researchers discovered was that people who sleep only five hours a day, with naps included, have TWICE the risk of suffering from angina, coronary heart disease, heart attack or stroke, compared to people who sleep seven hours a day. In addition, it was reported, that people who sleep nine or more hours a day have a ONE AND A HALF times the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Those that slept either six or eight hours had only an “elevated but less dramatic risk” according to the report. More findings included a sub-group of people over the age of 60. Researchers found that people over the age of 60 who sleep five hours or less a night are at the highest risk of developing cardiovascular disease.  People in this category are at THREE TIMES higher risk than those who sleep seven hours a night.  And, women who get only five hours of sleep a night are at TWO AND ONE HALF TIMES the risk compared to those who get seven hours a night. Why 7 hours seems to be the magic number is anyone’s guess so “get a good night’s sleep.”

Free Your Spine…

            As power comes into your home from an outside there is a control panel or a circuit breaker at the source.  From this circuit hundred’s of electrical wires bring power to your bathroom, living room, bedroom and kitchen.  If any of those circuits malfunction the appliances in your kitchen won’t function the way you want.   As much as you play with the toaster oven your bread will not come out as toast. As much as you turn the dials on the stove it won’t boil water.  Even if you replace your appliances with new ones they still won’t work.

            Just as your home has a circuit breaker so does your body.  You are born with a divine power within you that animates, motivates and coordinates your physiology and your life.  Without an ounce of attention from you this power coordinates millions of functions a minute.  Your circuit breaker is your spinal column.  From it 12 miles of nerves emanate to reach each and every cell of your body.  In fact every cell has between 3-9 nerve fibers going to it to bring life to those cells.

            Just like the appliances in your kitchen if your cells don’t receive the proper power or life supply they don’t function properly, they are not strong healthy cells.  A non functioning cell does not serve its purpose.  If it is supposed to make toast it won’t!  When you have enough malfunctioning cells that organ won’t serve its purpose for your physiology.  That part of your body becomes dysfunctional, it becomes weaker.  The weaker parts of your body become the areas that are prone to inflammation, infection, tumors.  This may take years it may happen sooner. 

            Once you realize a part isn’t functioning properly it is often because you are ill or have a condition related to that part.  For example, if it is your lung you may realize you get frequent bronchitis, or asthma or you just don’t have the respiratory endurance you once had.  As much as you get specialists to look at your lung symptoms and give you inhalers, or antibiotics or herbal support they won’t replace the malfunctioning weak cells with healthy cells.  Only the power within can do that once it animates the area properly.

            Regardless of where you have health challenges we want to remove any brown outs.  The key to a healthy life is a healthy spine.  Once the circuit breaker is back on your source can bring life to your body.  When the power goes on in a dark room your eyes may squint or be uncomfortable at first, you may even have to go around to all the clocks and reset them. Initially your weak cells are getting full power and this may strain them.   However, as time goes by your body begins replacing the weak malfunctioning cells with strong healthy cells.   As time goes by you notice that your body stronger, healthier more adaptable and youthful.  Once your spine is free your body can be free.

‘HEALTH CARE’ OR ‘SICK CARE?’

The United States spends over 70 percent of its health care budget to treat people suffering from diseases like cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and mental illness. This is according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

This sounds more like “sick care” rather than “health care.” That’s why health experts are now agreeing that a massive and on-going “healthy living” campaign must be launched in every neighborhood and city in the U.S.

Sure, a person can have angioplasty to unclog fatty arteries, receive radiation to kill a tumor, and take a multitude of medications to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, but these haphazard “solutions” come with a heavy penalty that often includes uncomfortable—and sometimes dangerous—side effects and a less enjoyable, lower quality of life. What American’s need is a real solution—a lifestyle of prevention.

“We need to do a better job of making people realize that chronic conditions are preventable,” says Janet Collins, director of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. “You can have an angioplasty, but it doesn’t equate to the same quality [as preventing heart disease].”

On a community level, part of the solution could be to provide preventive testing and assign a health worker to follow up with patients who tested poorly for things like blood pressure and cholesterol screenings. By educating people on how to naturally improve their health through simple diet and exercise choices, we’ll start to see a smaller amount of people suffering with chronic and often deadly diseases.

What can YOU do to prevent disease in your own body? Start by monitoring the foods you eat. Avoid trans fats and other fatty, processed foods. Everyday, eat fresh vegetables and fruits. Make time to exercise—even if it’s taking the stairs instead of the elevator, every bit of exercise counts. And empower your body to fight off disease by maintaining a healthy spine through regularly scheduled chiropractic adjustments.

Mercury in Medicine: Lawsuit against FDA

LAWSUIT AGAINST FDA: MERCURY IN MEDICINE

Mercury is the second most toxic element on earth, next to plutonium, yet the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows it to be widely used in the vaccines and medications you and your family may take each year. Mercury can be toxic when it is inhaled, taken orally or when placed on the skin. Its harmful effects have been scientifically linked to several diseases, including autism, learning disabilities, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, depression, and bipolar disorder. The reality of mercury use is alarming, yet the FDA—the government agency established to ensure the safety of Americans by weeding out all the harmful components of food products and drugs before they hit the market — could care less if we’re exposed to this life-threatening substance. Instead, they continue to allow mercury to be administered in at least 45 different over the counter drugs, including eye ointments, nasal sprays, and vaccines—including the Flu vaccine which is administered to children and pregnant women. This careless behavior is the driving force behind the Coalition for Mercury-free Drugs (CoMeD), who is now asking the U.S. federal court to force the FDA to comply with existing law and regulations by providing proof that mercury is safe for human consumption. Until mercury is proven safe, CoMeD asks that mercury-containing products be removed from the market. The law suit was filed because the FDA failed to answer issues raised in a citizen petition filed on August 24, 2004, by CoMeD representatives. By failing to provide any kind of proof that mercury testing has indeed been done, the FDA is admitting that they have not taken any action at all to test the safety or harm caused by consuming mercury. Adding fuel to the fire is a 1999 email, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, where an FDA official wrote that agency’s failure to evaluation the amount of mercury in medicine “…will raise questions about FDA being ‘asleep at the switch’ for decades by allowing a potentially hazardous compound to remain…and not forcing manufactures to exclude it from new products.” Knowledge is power and it could save your life.
